Former Santa Barbara High standout Daniel Nguyen and partner JT Sundling are one victory away from a doubles title at the USTA Junior Tennis National Hardcourt Championships in Michigan.
The top-seeded duo will be challenged by eighth-seeded Sekou Coker Bangoura and Nathan Pasha in Sunday’s final. Nguyen and Sundling hadn’t lost a set the entire draw until fighting off Evan King and Denis Kudla in the semifinals 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Spencer Simon’s run in the boys 16s singles draw ended in the fifth round with a three set loss to No. 8-seeded Gonzales Austin, who has since won two more matches to reach the final to face No. 1 seed Jack Sock.
Dos Pueblos sophomore Lauren Stratman competed at the Girls 16s USTA Hardcourt National Championships in San Diego. After losing her second round match in the main draw, Stratman won two more matches in the back draw, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 17 seed Aria Lambert, before being knocked out by Julia Casselbury.
In doubles, Stratman and partner Ware, made it to the Round of 32 where they ran into top-seeds Chanelle Van Nguyen and Kylie McPhilips and suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.
Reigning Channel League boys singles champion Chase Melton was also in Michigan. The soon-to-be Santa Barbara High senior won a match in the back draw in the boys 18s, but withdrew during his match with Cale Hammond due to injury.
