John Warren's 13 strikeouts went a long way in helping Cate baseball team mow down visiting Maricopa on Friday, taking the Rams to a 14-0 opening-round CIF victory at Jackson Field."When you get into the playoffs, one pitcher can stop you - they did it last year," said Rams head coach Ben Soto, whose 2008 team suffered an opening round upset in CIF. UCSB's Mike Ford was about three inches away from getting out of Friday's fifth inning with a 3-1 lead.Instead, he left it 15 minutes later trailing 11-3.Such is life when you're facing the best college baseball team in the country.Ford seemed to have UC Irvine's Ben Orloff out on a check swing, but Orloff held up just in time to stay alive. Eight Westmont track and field athletes competed on the first day of the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday in Edwardsville, Illinois with mixed results. Lorin Milotta took the initial step in her quest to capture All-American honors by finishing first in the first heat of the 100 meter hurdles. The Santa Barbara Pony League Bronco All Stars sparkled in their debut, winning first place in the annual Memorial Day Tournament held at MacKenzie Park. In Saturday’s opener, the 12-and-under home team blitzed the visiting Danville Diablos 8-0.The All Stars continued their winning ways over the weekend to earn top seed for Monday’s championship match-up. Quick Ventura race keeps Platinum busy

There’s not much to say about the prologue at the Ventura State Race, held May 16-17, except that it had a bunch of turns, two climbs, a good descent onto the main street finish, and was only 1.7 miles. Everybody could have benefited from a race pace pre-ride but on this typically traffic-ridden course nobody had the opportunity so everybody was equalized.
