Brontsema lands prized recruits

UCSB baseball coach Bob Brontsema announced on Monday that the Gauchos had signed a quintet of outstanding players to National Letters of Intent.   Four of the five players are from junior colleges and two of the Gauchos’ signees are highly-touted pitchers. SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco used a 15-0 run late in the game to overcome an 11-point UCSB lead, and then held-on for a 73-72 win in San Francisco on Monday night.The Gauchos, who led most of the game, committed six of their 21 turnovers during the decisive rally that began with just over four minutes left and ended when Dior Lowhorn made a three-pointer from deep in the left corner. Gaucho offense sputters in loss to Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — UCSB's women's basketball team slogged through a tough first half and despite a second-half rally, it resulted in a tough loss on Sunday to Arizona, 54-47.UCSB scored just 10 points in the first half, shooting a meager five for 30 from the field (16.7%). Westmont’s Griego represents Warriors at National Championship

Lisa Griego served as Westmont's lone representative at the 2008 NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championship on Saturday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  Griego finished in forty-first place out of a field of 336 qualifiers, completing the course in 18:22.It wasn't the experience which Griego had expected in her final year of competition. Outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin finished her career on a high note, recording a match-high 21 kills to lead the UCSB volleyball team to a 3-1 (16-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-23) victory over Big West opponent UC Riverside on senior night Saturday at the Thunderdome. Eldrin Jones passed for two touchdowns and ran for another Saturday night in the Tremblay Financial Services Bowl as Pasadena piled up the points in a 45-14 victory over Southwestern.Jones, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound freshman from Miami amassed 348 total yards to win MVP honors on the inaugural Community College football game.
