SBCC crushed by another elite team

VENTURA — “Everything bad that happened, that could happen, did happen.”

Unfortunately for Santa Barbara City College’s football team, head coach Craig Moropoulos was referring to a just-completed 49-0 drubbing handed down by former conference-rival Ventura College.

The Pirates, ranked No. 12 in California, forced the Vaqueros into five first-half turnovers that led to 28 points — 21 in the first quarter alone.

“It was out of hand and it got out of hand early,” continued Moropoulos, whose team starts conference play next Saturday against Antelope Valley at 0-3.

“We’re not where we want to be. The fact of the matter is we’ve got a lot of young people. And we’re going to get better by playing these types of (teams).”

The 3-0 Pirates definitely looked like Southern California’s sixth-ranked school. Quarterback Lee Mondol threw three touchdowns, two to 6-foot-3, 211-pound wideout Tim Pope. St. Bonaventure product Michael Lee rushed for two more as Ventura built the score up to 49-0 by halftime.

The Vaqueros did have some success in the running game. The team gained 126 yards as Justin Leverette led the way with 83 yards on 14 carries. Tristan Carter gained 51 yards behind a line that had three members getting their first starts of the season.

“I thought our offensive line did a decent job,” conceded Moropoulos, whose team ran on 10 straight plays in SBCC’s first drive of the third quarter. “They had to rise up and they did.”

City College lost wide receiver and kick returner Ravonte Wilkerson to a broken collarbone in the first quarter. He could be out up to eight weeks.

Conference play starts next Saturday when the Vaqueros play at La Playa Stadium for the first time since their season opener on Sept. 6. Antelope Valley visits for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
